Embracing the Sit-Down Shower
I’ve always been an advocate for a sit-down shower; it’s my ultimate self-care tool. I’ve been trying to convince my friends that it is ‘the one’. Recently, whilst watching Netflix’s show ‘You Can’t Ask That’, another lady was advocating for the same thing; it’s not just me who knows how good it feels.
The Comfort of Sitting Down
Sometimes, I simply don’t have the energy to stand. Other times, I’m feeling so low that sitting and clutching my knees as the water cascades over my head feels not only dramatic, but also allows me to cry freely without interruption. Let’s be honest: standing can be overwhelming, and life can feel like an endurance test on its own.
I don’t have to be sad to enjoy a sit-down shower, and sometimes I don’t even sit down…I will lie down in the bath and have the shower pelt on my stomach. You can bend the rules, it’s ok. At the end of the day, if it gets the job done, then who cares? There’s no rulebook stating that you must shower standing up to be a functional adult. Self-care is about discovering what works for you. If sitting down brings you comfort, then it’s absolutely the right choice.
Breaking the Pressure of “Doing It Right”
The pressure to do things “properly” often weighs heavily on me. I’ve longed to be “normal” and follow the so-called “adult” way of doing things. However, after speaking with many people, I’ve discovered that countless others share these thoughts, regardless of how “grown-up” they may appear.
Maybe you’re recovering from an illness, dealing with a chronic condition, or just mentally and physically drained. Whatever the reason, sit-down showers are a way to honour your needs. Plus, it’s a perfect way to take a moment and breathe (while still getting clean, of course).
Redefining Self-Care
It’s time to let go of the outdated notion that there’s only one “correct” way to do things. The sit-down shower exemplifies how adapting routines to fit your needs is a valid form of self-care. So, the next time you feel guilty for not standing, remind yourself that you’re advocating for your own needs. The real question is: Does it work for you? If the answer is yes, grab your favourite shampoo, turn on some music or a podcast, and indulge in that well-deserved self-care.
On another note, the show ‘You Can’t Ask That’ is brilliant, giving so many perspectives from different groups of people and showing that no experience is the same even when they are similar. I wish they would carry this show around the world (It’s set in Australia).
